One of the things we are most often asked about is replicating the look of polished concrete. It’s been a growing trend for some time, but in recent months it’s become more and more popular in people’s homes and we’ve noticed the increased interest in practical alternatives.
A contemporary canvas
There is no doubt about the aesthetic appeal of polished concrete – chic, minimalist and industrial it works as an ideal foil to more classic or traditional interiors, or it can complement modern minimalism and rough textures. More than anything it acts as a neutral backdrop that’s anything but boring – unique but universal, distinctive but discreet.
A practical improvement
However, the physical properties of polished concrete are from ideal for a residential environment. Unforgivingly hard, concrete is also often cold underfoot and most importantly it will invariably crack at some point. This is where a Sphere8 poured resin floor can provide the ideal solution.
So what are the main differences between a polished concrete floor and a Sphere8 alternative…?
- Polished concrete has a limited range of colours – although the options are increasing you are still restricted… Sphere8 floors are available in almost any colour, from a subtle grey blend of pigments to a neon pink RAL shade (if you’d like…!). Most importantly we can colour-match almost anything, so you don’t have to compromise at all.
- Warmth and comfort… A concrete floor is infamously cold and hard, whereas the Sphere8 biopolymer resin is warm underfoot, smooth and soft. This makes it much better suited to residential use and can be the deciding factor for many of our clients. Come to our London showroom and experience our floors for yourself!
- Obviously you also need to consider the durability of your floor, and whilst polished concrete is almost guaranteed to crack at some point, a resin floor will stay seamless. When installing a polished concrete floor you often need to moderate cracking by cutting joints – but a Sphere8 floor is a truly seamless finish and will last as such.
- Finally there is the environmental concern. Polished concrete contains high levels of cement, which is one of the most energy intensive materials on the planet. By contrast our resin is made from a highly renewable natural source (the castor bean!) which is cleaner, safer and better for the environment.
Other differences to consider are the depth (100mm for polished concrete, compared to 4mm for the average Sphere8 resin floor), cost considerations and installation times – all of which one of our expert sales consultants would be happy to go through with you.
